Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights

One of the many benefits of living this far north is during the winter we are treated to the Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights. The come out and dance for us on a regular basis and during the long winter months it becomes and addicting pursuit to try and capture a shot. I am still learning how to get these shots but my two best shots this winter are probably the ones below. The top one was taken from my front porch while I was getting ready for work. The one below I was actually able to capture some colors. These colors grace us when we have a strong storm. If you are in the Northern latitudes or will be visiting them check out this great website, Aurora Notify ,  it has a lot of great information and they have been a fantastic resource for me.

  1. Trying to plan a trip this year to somewhere to see this magnificent sight and trying to figure out .. is there a particular season ? I thought winter but a friend who has been inviting me to Yellowknife in Canada says it can be seen from August on. Will check your link – thanks for sharing … and I am almost as green as the beautiful Aurora .. 🙂

    1. Rambling Rose both you and your friend are correct. For us in Alaska the best and only time to see this beautiful sight is during our winter season. This is mainly because during the summer the sun stays up for most, if not all, of the day. Your friend in Yellowknife is correct that you can see it as early as August, depending on where you live. Other than the making sure it gets dark where you are it is really a game of chance to get to catch a show. Definitely check out the website, as it has regular updates on forecast based on the suns activities. Good luck, I hope you are able to catch a show.
