Congratulations, you have finally arrived in one of Alaska’s best kept secrets: Valdez, AK. This small town has so many opportunities available to explore. Do you like to hike? fish? kayak? camp? take a sightseeing boat tour? whitewater raft? wildlife viewing? glacier viewing? museums? And these are just what is available during the summer. Valdez is known for its snowfall and hosts some great winter activities as well. But back to the summer time activities, this area is probably one of the most alive areas I have been to. “Alive” meaning that everywhere you look there seems to be wildlife: bears (black & brown), eagles, bunnies, porcupines, seals, sea lions, otters and many more. I will spend a couple weeks of posts on all of my finds from our stay in Valdez.
I will be honest, I am biased as this is one of my favorite Alaskan places. We go every chance we can. Recently we made the trip over and spent a week during the 4th of July. It was a bit early for our favorite activity, salmon fishing, but we still had a lot of fun. We managed to be in the area during the town’s celebration. We were lucky enough to get to watch their parade, multiple contests(pie eating, slowest bike, canoe jousting), a Coast Guard demonstration, free picnic and of course a fireworks show. This little town is friendly and full of surprises.
